Translation as a bridge tool between minority and majority cultural areas

Abstract

Globalization is one of the current issues being dealt with in many fields of study. Many international institutions are continually organizing meetings and conferences to discuss policies that can integrate many entities, countries and populations that are still marginalized, with a view to avoiding the development of cultural majority and minority areas. Translation is one of the key elements that favour these policies because it allows cultural exchanges and impacts, not only the literary production, but also the socioeconomic situation of the whole world. The aim of this article is to provide some strategies and theories that will prevent the ranking of cultures and opposing spaces which are cultural majority areas and cultural minority areas, using a detailed methodology. The works of postcolonial authors such as Ahmadou Kourouma and their translated versions were analysed. The choice of corpus was justified by the fact that he is one of the pioneers who fought for the ranking of cultures and advocated for the diversity of cultures by use of a particular language that he created and a style that he owns. Furthermore, the study was also underpinned by the recent scientific literature on Translation Studies using a postcolonial approach, which is the principal approach of this study. The findings revealed that translation has been the backbone of the establishment of contrary areas by the different strategies that were applied and the direction that all the translations followed during the postcolonial period. Likewise, it was also revealed that these areas could be prevented if new strategies are applied in translation. Many obstacles to global integration would not exist if the act of translation changes. These strategies are not exhaustive but are key to an effective global space.
